One woman whose life would undeniably improve if her husband were gone is Pat Simms. She and Captain Novotny have been growing closer, and when the two secretly meet for a picnic he reveals his attraction to her, perspicaciously having inferred her unhappiness with her husband. Unfortunately, that husband has resurfaced, albeit in the hospital, having been injured by a stray artillery shell. - The attraction between Pat and Marek continues to grow, but the risk of acting on their feelings is huge. At the reading of his will, Frances discovers that Peter was keeping a secret from her.

Pat is tempted by her feelings for Marek while Bob is in hospital. Steph is delighted when Stan returns home on leave, but the reunion is overshadowed by his fears of invasion. Frances discovers a secret at the reading of the will. Steph fins it hard to deal with the work required during harvest time. Sarah ends up in a dangerous situation, whilst Teresa has a huge decision to make. A newcomer to the village causes friction between Sarah and Frances.
When David discovers what she has done, he enlists in the Navy anyway. Shortly thereafter the Navy delivers an official letter which Miriam hides in a panic, assuming it is a notice of his death. She cannot face opening the letter and having her fears turn into immutable reality. However, when Bryn finds the hidden and unopened letter, it turns out they are reporting that he is only missing in action. Grasping at straws, Miriam sees this as actually hopeful as it means the Navy is not sure of his death and that he may still be alive, though lost.

Still playing the dutiful wife, Pat visits Bob in the hospital and he characteristically scolds her for not bringing chocolate – a treat she shared with Captain Novotny, not that Bob knows. Bob will soon move home as an invalid, ensuring Pat’s affair will be much more difficult to carry on. Yet Captain Novotny helps Pat set up a sickroom in her house, despite the implications for their relationship.

Later Teresa reveals herself to Alison as a lesbian. Initially Alison is shocked but she overcomes her initial shock and reassures Teresa that she wants her to stay as Teresa has become her best friend.

He was a journalist in the First World War and suffered injuries to his arm and leg from shrapnel, though he admits it was nowhere near combat.
Pat Simms makes an unlikely friend in the village, and Sarah Collingborne gets unwelcome news about her husband, a chaplain at the front. A tragedy for Frances Barden overshadows everything else. The women of Great Paxford return in this “irresistible” period drama.
Just days after the broadcast of the final episode of season 2, ITV announced it was cancelling the show and there would be no third season. A network spokesman said that despite the show's success, "the ITV commissioning team continues to refresh the channel's drama portfolio, hence the decision not to commission a further new season."
